Potions, food and drink in The Blood of Dawnwalker
Consumables are how Coen patches himself up between fights in The Blood of Dawnwalker. All 102 of them are single use, and they cover healing ointments, alchemical draughts, blood vials and plain food and drink. Each one lists the effects it applies and how long those effects last.
Effects are not invented for this database. Every consumable applies one of the game status effects, and 127 of the 248 status effects in The Blood of Dawnwalker come from a consumable, which is more than any other source. Each consumable page links to the effect it applies so the exact modifiers and duration are visible.
Food is weaker in combat, crafted potions are not
Food and drink are deliberately less effective while Coen is in combat, which is the single most important thing to know about consumables in The Blood of Dawnwalker. The habit worth building is eating before a fight rather than during one.
Crafted consumables are the exception. Items made in the crafting panel from a recipe keep their full strength in combat, which is what makes the 44 recipes in the game worth hunting for. A crafted draught in a quickslot is a genuine combat resource; a loaf of bread in the same slot is not.
Blood vials and the vampire form
In the vampire form, drinking blood is the only way Coen restores health. That normally means biting an enemy, but blood vials in the inventory work too, and a vial has to be assigned to a quickslot beforehand to be reachable mid-fight. On Story difficulty this restriction is lifted and blood can be drunk straight from the inventory at any time.
Some drinks also carry a restriction on when they can be used at all, and a few effects are written to last until the end of the current day or the end of the next one rather than for a number of seconds. Those durations are listed on each consumable page rather than converted into a fake timer.
Buying, carrying and selling consumables
Merchants across Vale Sangora stock consumables on a refresh cycle, and each consumable page lists which of the 51 merchants carries it. Prices scale with item level on a compounding 1.0369 multiplier, so the same potion costs noticeably more when bought late in the game.
Weight is worth watching. Consumables are individually light, but carrying dozens of them adds up, and going over the inventory weight limit makes Coen overencumbered, unable to run or fast travel until the excess is sold, destroyed or stashed at a shrine.
