What manuals do in The Blood of Dawnwalker
Some perks in The Blood of Dawnwalker cannot be learned at a shrine until Coen has read the manual that teaches them. There are 49 manuals in the game, and each one gates a specific perk or active ability behind a book that has to be found in the world first.
This makes manuals a second progression track running alongside experience. Skill points come from levelling and from quests, but if the manual has not been found, the points cannot be spent on that perk no matter how high Coen level is. Each manual page names the skill it unlocks, the tree it sits in and its tier.
How manuals drop
Manual drops are governed by a rising chance rather than a flat one. The base drop chance is 5 percent, and every drop that does not produce a book raises that chance by a further 5 percent, so a dry streak makes the next book more likely rather than less.
There is also a hard guarantee behind the scenes for active ability books, which are forced after a long enough run without one. In practice that means manuals accumulate steadily through ordinary looting, and the expected count rises sharply through the mid game: a couple of books by level 8, around twenty by level 14 and roughly seventy by level 30.
Reading manuals and spending points
Reading a manual only makes the perk available. Learning it still costs skill points at a shrine, and advanced perks also cost time, which pushes the day and night bar forward. A manual read late in the day can therefore turn into a perk learned at night.
Perk levels have their own requirements on top of the manual. Level 2 of a perk needs Coen at player level 5 with at least 2 skill points already spent, level 3 needs level 10 and 4 points spent, and level 4 needs level 15 and 6 points spent. A manual for a high tier perk found early is worth keeping in mind rather than acting on immediately.
Manuals in the inventory
Manuals are readable items, so they sit in the inventory with weight and a sale value until read. Reading one is permanent, and the physical copy can be sold afterwards, which is a small but real way to keep inventory weight down in The Blood of Dawnwalker.
Duplicate manuals do nothing once the perk is unlocked, so they are pure merchant fodder. Each manual page lists its sources, whether that is a loot table, a merchant or a quest reward, which makes tracking down a specific missing book far easier than farming at random.
